New Members’ Testimonies
by Susanna Yong
“Now our whole family has started a new life in Singapore, and we have also found LPPC. ………….. There are still plenty of uncertainties ahead of us, and definitely we are not free of worries. But I have now learnt to rely on God and face all these with peace in our mind and in our heart.”
I grew up in a protected environment where everything was pretty much provided and planned for by my parents. All that I needed to do was to study and do well in school. After marrying Kenny, my life was still pretty much the same, with him taking the place of my parents in providing and caring for me. I was happy then and had nothing much to worry about.
Until one day, Kenny’s attitude towards me changed dramatically, to coldness and even cruelty. At the same time, he had caused a lot of damage to the family’s financial stability. Back in those days before I became a Christian, my husband was the cornerstone of my life and personal security. I tried to muster all the methods and energy I could to stop Kenny from hurting me and the family, but all my effort was in vain. My whole world collapsed. I thought of ending my life back in those dark days. Fortunately, every time such dark thoughts came to mind, there was this little voice from deep within my heart that spoke out to me. It said, “Susanna, don’t be afraid. You are not alone. Let me lead you through this. You just have to take care of your own, and I will handle all the rest. There is a way out.” I strongly felt that was God talking to me. That was when I started to go to church and receive God’s Word into my life. Subsequently, Kenny also came with me to the church.
Miraculously, countless times during the church service, both of us felt that the speakers were as if talking directly to us and addressing our own issues. We could only conclude it was God speaking to us through the mouth of the speakers and every word was hitting home straight to our hearts. Countless times we cried. We admitted we were sinners and named God as our Lord and our Saviour. We were willing to let God lead our life. That was how we began our journey to become Christian and were baptised 5 years ago around Easter.
After being baptised, our life didn’t go any smoother – the financial problems created were still haunting us and it was very tough time for us. But how we lived our life and faced all these hardships were complete different. We knew then we only needed to do our parts and leave all the rest in the hands of God, and He would lead us to the path that was right for us. It might not be a straight wide yellow-brick road but certainly a road that leads us to happiness rather than death. We had peace then. Our problem was gradually resolved.
Now our whole family has started a new life in Singapore, and we have also found LPPC. Life is more stable and secure than it used to be. This is the blessing of God and entirely His leading. There are still plenty of uncertainties ahead of us, and definitely we are not free of worries. But I have now learnt to rely on God and face all these with peace in our mind and in our heart.
This new LPPC family that we are joining is not as large a church as the one we attended back in Hong Kong. On the other hand, we feel the warmth and a much more personal touch from fellow members. Many of the fellow members are proactively showing care for how we are settling down and talking to us, trying to understand our situation and getting to know us as individuals. This really moves me. Now I hope to grow as a Christian in LPPC and one day be able to contribute to serve in the church.
