Who Is Jesus?
C.S. Lewis proposed that Jesus was either a “Lunatic, Liar or Lord”. Everyone, whether young or old, informed or not, will have an answer. Your answer to this short question about Jesus matters eternally.
Your answer will identify whether you are a Christian, one who professes to follow Christ as his disciple. The path that a Christian follows is none other than the way of suffering. “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps” (1 Peter 3:21).
Many Jews did not follow Jesus. They could not accept the truth that Christ had to suffer. Their Messiah was an all conquering King and not the suffering Servant of Isaiah as quoted by Peter, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
It is striking that so many who ought to know who Jesus is do not. As a result, they have no hope. Everything they have, including their lives, will perish, be defiled and fade (1 Peter 1:4).
There is nothing more important in this world (and the next!) for you and the nations to know than who Jesus is and follow him. This is one of the reasons that Ligonier Ministries (founded by R.C. Sproul) recently published their statement on Christology¹ which declares who Jesus is and what he has done.
As you read this statement, may God our Father through his Spirit help you and the people around you to confess that his Son, “Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:11).
The Word Made Flesh
The LIGONIER STATEMENT on CHRISTOLOGY
We confess the mystery and wonder of God made flesh and rejoice in our great salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
With the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Son created all things, sustains all things, and makes all things new. Truly God, He became truly man, two natures in one person.
He was born of the Virgin Mary and lived among us. Crucified, dead, and buried, He rose on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will come again in glory and judgment.
For us, He kept the Law, atoned for sin, and satisfied God’s wrath. He took our filthy rags and gave us His righteous robe.
He is our Prophet, Priest, and King, building His church, interceding for us, and reigning over all things.
Jesus Christ is Lord; we praise His holy Name forever.
